Before you book a painter or decorator
Decorating is mostly preparation, and the quote should say how much of it there is.
What does the quote include?
Filling, sanding, sealing and the number of coats should all be written down. Two quotes for the same room can differ by a day of preparation.
Do they know older walls?
Lime plaster and old cottage walls need breathable paint rather than a modern vinyl emulsion, or the damp has nowhere to go. Ask what they would use on the walls you have.
Are they insured?
Ladders and a full tin of paint over a carpet are the two things that go wrong. Public liability insurance covers both.
