Pamber Heath

Pamber Heath was open heath until the Pamber enclosure act of 1824. The award that followed in 1827 set aside a public gravel pit, which is where the Memorial Hall and the tennis courts stand now. There were four houses on the heath in 1839 and about seventy by 1881, many of them put up by squatters on allotments nobody had given them leave to build on, and the Pelican on Silchester Road was already the village's one pub.

St Luke's was built in 1876 as a school and opened as a church in 1880, and from 1881 to 1909 it was both, the only years Pamber Heath has had a school of its own. Most of today's village came after the Second World War, beginning with the council houses at Burney Bit. Electricity arrived in the late 1940s, and the Gospel Hall was built in 1973 and the present Memorial Hall in 1977.

Pamber Forest, along the village's western edge, is what remains of a medieval royal forest. It is now a nature reserve and, with Silchester Common, a Site of Special Scientific Interest. A couple of miles south, at Pamber End, is the church of Pamber Priory, founded under Henry I as a cell of a Norman abbey.
