St Mary the Virgin, Aldermaston

Parish church

EveryVillage Partner

The Norman parish church with medieval wall paintings, the Forster tomb and the York Nativity every December.

About

St Mary's is on Church Road, close by Aldermaston Court, and it's older than it looks under the pebbledash. The nave is twelfth century, extended around 1210, with a shingled spire on top. Inside there are wall paintings from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, two thirteenth century glass roundels said to be the oldest glass in Berkshire, and the alabaster tomb of Sir George Forster and his wife Elizabeth from about 1530. Every December since 1957 the village has put on the York Nativity play here, in medieval costume, with the choir singing from the ringing chamber. Tickets are free.
