Before you book a roofer
Roofing is the trade with the most cold callers, so the first check is how you found them.
Did they knock on your door?
A roofer who has spotted a problem from the road and offers to fix it today is the classic doorstep scam. A real roofer is busy and does not need to canvass.
Will they photograph the problem?
You cannot see your own roof. A good roofer takes a photo of what is wrong and another when it is fixed, and sends both.
Are they in a trade body?
The National Federation of Roofing Contractors and the Confederation of Roofing Contractors both vet their members. Not essential for a small repair, worth having for a whole roof.
