Parish church

EveryVillage Partner

The parish church, Norman and Grade I listed, with medieval wall paintings inside.

About

St James' stands on The Street in the old centre of the village. It is a Norman church that has been added to since, with a west tower of 1636 that replaced a wooden one and an addition of 1802 designed by John Soane, and it is listed Grade I. What brings visitors is inside. In the 1870s the vicar, Charles Eddy, uncovered wall paintings and painted texts from the thirteenth to the sixteenth centuries that had been whitewashed over in 1550 and 1551. The earliest, on the south wall, show a series of martyrdoms, the best preserved being the murder of Thomas Becket in 1170, and on the north wall is a large sixteenth century St Christopher. The church is one of two in a benefice with St Leonard's at Sherfield on Loddon, and the church office is at Cross House on The Street.
