St Leonard's Church, Sherfield on Loddon
Parish church
The parish church at Church End, a mile south of the village, fourteenth century under a shingled spire.
About
St Leonard's stands at Church End on the Reading Road, a mile south of the green, opposite the turning for Wildmoor Lane. It's where the village began, beside the moated site of the first manor house, and the village moved north and left it there. The building is fourteenth century, flint with stone dressings under a shingled broach spire, and was almost wholly rebuilt in 1866, the tower in 1872. Inside there are brasses of 1590 and 1595, tomb slabs of 1708 and 1735, a painted benefactors' board of 1710 and Victorian pews that came from the redundant church at Stratfield Turgis. Holy Communion is on the first and third Sundays at ten, there's a service every Sunday at ten, and a church room with a kitchen and toilets. Grade II listed.

We wrote this page ourselves, from information St Leonard's Church, Sherfield on Loddon and others have published. Compiled 17 October 2026 from the church's entry on A Church Near You (address, services, the church room and access), Historic England's list entry 1092816 (the building, its dates and fittings) and the Victoria County History's account of the parish (the manor site by the church), read through search results. Service times should be checked against the Loddon Valley Link before a visit. Pinned at the RG27 0JB postcode position, which is Church End, rather than the building's own door. If you help run it, send us a correction or ask us to take the page down.
