St Mary the Virgin, Silchester
Parish church
The parish church, twelfth century, standing beside the Roman town wall.

About
St Mary the Virgin stands on its own at the end of Church Lane, beside the east wall of the Roman town of Calleva and a good way from the village it serves. The earliest walls date from the beginning of the twelfth century and the position is older still, because it was built on the site of Roman temples, on ground thought to have been held sacred long before that. It is Grade I listed, and it is in use week by week rather than kept as a monument.
