The Green, Sherfield on Loddon

Village green

Thirty-six acres of green in the middle of the village, with the cricket, the football, the tennis courts and the play areas on it.

About

The Green is the middle of Sherfield on Loddon and the reason the village looks the way it does, with the houses standing round the edge of it. It's what's left of the parish's common grazing, thirty-six acres of it, and it had been let go by the 1920s. In 1972 the parish council laid it out for sport, and it has the cricket pitch and pavilion, football, tennis courts and children's play areas on it now. The Reindeer Trail runs from the cricket pavilion in December, and the fete and the show are held in the village each summer.

We wrote this page ourselves, from information The Green, Sherfield on Loddon and others have published. Compiled 17 October 2026 from Basingstoke and Deane's Sherfield on Loddon conservation area appraisal and the neighbourhood plan's character assessment (the green's size and its origin as common grazing), Sherfield on Loddon Parish Council's events page (the Reindeer Trail at the cricket pavilion) and a Hampshire Life account of the 1972 work, read through search results. Pinned at the village's own grid reference, SU680580, which is the green. If you help run it, send us a correction or ask us to take the page down.
