Before you book a gardener
A gardener who takes the waste away is carrying waste for a living, and the law has a word for that.
Do they have a waste carrier licence?
Anyone who takes cuttings away in a van needs to be registered with the Environment Agency as a waste carrier, and it is free to check online. If the waste is fly-tipped, the fine can land on the householder it came from.
Maintenance or projects?
Regular mowing and hedges, or landscaping, patios and planting, are different businesses. Ask which they mostly do, and how often they could come.
Are the tools and the insurance theirs?
A gardener with their own kit and public liability insurance can work unsupervised. One using your mower is doing you a favour, not running a business.
