Gardeners in Silchester
Overview
Silchester's gardens sit on the light, sandy ground of the common, which drains fast, dries out in summer and grows heather, birch and bracken if left alone. It is easy to dig and hard to keep moist, so mulching and watering matter more than they do a few miles east on the clay. Many gardens back onto the common or Pamber Forest and inherit their wildlife and their seedlings. A gardener who takes green waste away needs a waste carrier registration, and the common itself is common land, so nothing gets tipped over the fence.

Garden maintenance and planting

Before you book a gardener
A gardener who takes the waste away is carrying waste for a living, and the law has a word for that.
Do they have a waste carrier licence?
Anyone who takes cuttings away in a van needs to be registered with the Environment Agency as a waste carrier, and it is free to check online. If the waste is fly-tipped, the fine can land on the householder it came from.
Maintenance or projects?
Regular mowing and hedges, or landscaping, patios and planting, are different businesses. Ask which they mostly do, and how often they could come.
Are the tools and the insurance theirs?
A gardener with their own kit and public liability insurance can work unsupervised. One using your mower is doing you a favour, not running a business.
